Why join us?

Location: Nestled in the Surrey Hills, with immediate access to the surrounding countryside and a 5-minute walk to Guildford town and train station, 'County' uniquely combines both tranquillity and convenience. We are right on the A31, which makes commuting to the school incredibly convenient and our historic building gives a sense that you are working somewhere very special.

Culture: We have deep-rooted values and traditions that are centred around our C.A.S.T.L.E. framework.  One of the greatest benefits of working at County is our strategy to deliver a genuine sense of belonging for all members of the school community.  This is not a place where students just come to learn, it is a place where they come to belong. From our annual whole school Surrey Hills walk and numerous House competitions to regular services at Guildford Cathedral, County brings everyone together. We are a Music College and offer our students and staff the chance to engage with one of our many choirs and to learn from expert visiting instrumental teachers. There are many opportunities to engage with the wider life of the school, including Duke of Edinburgh’s Award trips, staff v sixth form weekly football and morning run club.

Learning: Evidence-informed and suitable to our context, we combine the flexibility to teach in a style that suits you with the structure to deliver great learning with precision and clarity in every lesson, every day.  We have the very highest of expectations of both our students and our motivated staffing body. We are not ashamed to be academic but realise that great learning has to be based on lessons being a place where students attend to their learning. Our dedicated staff work in partnership with students, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust, which helps students to achieve their full potential. We provide outstanding and varied learning experiences and the school is renowned for its friendliness and student support. We operate a mantra of ‘kindness, but with a bottom line’.

Professional Development: Without a doubt, the factor that most affects a child's learning is the quality of the teaching and therefore the quality of the teacher. That is why we are committed to outstanding and ongoing professional development opportunities. Every staff member has a learning coach who helps them with a bespoke coaching goal. We also have a shortened day every fortnight to allow for professional development to take place within the school day. Every INSET Day and professional development opportunity is carefully curated to ensure that everyone is able, willing and motivated to continually improve.

Support Staff: We are a family and every adult at County is committed to giving every child the best life chances. Support staff help to create a smooth, positive and efficient learning environment for students and teachers. We pride ourselves on fostering a friendly and welcoming workplace where you feel respected, supported and part of a strong team. We also invest in your growth, offering training opportunities through coaching, mentoring, cross-department knowledge sharing, formal CPD and collaborative INSET Day events.

Facilities: As a proudly device-rich school, every member of our teaching staff is provided with a personal laptop, supporting flexibility and freedom in how and where they work. In addition, we have on site access to our gym and sports hall facilities.  We believe strongly in maintaining a healthy work-life balance; there is no expectation to be connected around the clock. Instead, we champion the smart use of digital tools, including AI, to make workloads more manageable and teaching more impactful. Looking to the future, we are excited to be moving towards a one-device-per-child model, ensuring that every student has equal access to the powerful learning opportunities technology can bring.
